A Boy and His Chairs
We moved into our home almost 8 years ago.
When we did, we bought a large kitchen table with 8 chairs
to accommodate all 7 of us. They looked something like this:
Within the first year, Josiah broke all 8 chairs.
Fortunately, they were all replaced FREE of charge before the year
was out.
Unfortunately, Josiah continued to break chairs.
There is something about the sound of things crashing to the tile
floor that fascinates him, I think.
Or maybe he just likes to test his strength. I'm not really
sure.
Slowly then we began replacing chairs on an as needed basis.
Eventually, we decided padded-chairs would be a better
solution. They looked like this:
And, for a little while, they were.
But, in time, Josiah managed to destroy those as well.
His incessant bouncing wore down the fabric.
Padded-chairs break after repeatedly being hurled to the floor,
just like the plain wooden ones.
So, we figured we would out wit this kid. We bought a large
padded benchseat for one side of the table. It seats 3 and looks like
this:
The plan was, out of sight, out of mind. If we tucked the
benchseat under the table where Josiah wouldn't see it, he would forget about
it and leave it alone.
It worked.
He rarely messes with the benchseat.
However, he still had chairs on 3 sides of the table to destroy.
And, he did.
For the past year or so, we have limped through with chairs in
various stages of destruction.
Josiah's chair for the longest time has looked like this:
Last week, I bought new chairs.
They looked like this:
And this:
Nobody liked
them.
Jesse said
they were chairs for getting haircuts.
Rick noted
that the metal base crashing to the ground could break the tile floor.
So, the chairs
went back.
Now we have
these:
Except ours still have the price tags hanging off of them. We're not sure we can commit to these yet, because...
Josiah picks
them up and tosses them aside with ease.
That's it.
I am done.
This chair
game is getting old and I am plum out of ideas.
Short of
bolting the chairs to the floor, I don't know what else to do.
Or so I
thought.
If you know me at all, you know I never give up.
We will give
these benchseats just a little while longer.
And then, I'm
cutting the tables legs down to a few inches...
...and we will eat like this:
